Choosing the Right Waterfront Property for Your New Home: The Neighborhood

A new home is a significant investment, so you want to make sure you protect your investment by building in the right area.

You spend a significant amount of time picking and choosing the features of your new home. However, if that home is in the wrong neighborhood it can make everything seem uncomfortable. A new home is a significant investment, so you want to make sure you protect your investment by building in the right area. Here just a few of the things you’ll want to check in a neighborhood before committing to build in that area.

Neighborhood Selection Checklist

Work commute– If you’re like most people, your work commute plays a significant role in choosing a neighborhood. No one wants to spend a large portion of their morning sitting in traffic! If you’re one of the lucky few who can work remotely, or you’re retired, commute really isn’t a concern.

New or historic– Take a look at the architecture in the neighborhood. Your new home will be custom built just for you, but many people like their home to go with the aesthetic of the rest of their chosen neighborhood.

Schools– If you have children or you’re planning to, then finding a neighborhood near good schools is a must. A simple internet search will be able to tell you if a piece of land you’re considering is in the district of good schools.

Recreation– One of the best parts of living on or near the water is that there are plenty of recreational opportunities. But what do you do when it’s too cold to enjoy a day out on the boat? Most waterfront areas have plenty of indoor activities as well. Research based on your interests and hobbies.

Neighborhood or community association– Most neighborhoods have a neighborhood or community association, which will set guidelines for yard and home appearance, and other things like that. They often come with an annual fee as well. Some homeowners enjoy living in an area with a community association, and others don’t.

Visit during different times of the day– Does the neighborhood get horribly gridlocked during rush hours? How is the flow of traffic? Are there lots of children playing outside after school? Is it well-lit at night? Visit the neighborhood you’re considering at different times of day to observe what everyday life is like in that area. Could you see yourself going about your daily routine in that environment?
