Fall and Winter Fishing in the Chesapeake Bay

Fall and Winter Fishing in the Chesapeake Bay

Most people think that fishing is a mostly summer activity, but in Maryland, there is still plenty of great fish left!

For many Maryland waterfront residents, the best part about where they live is the abundance of fishing opportunities. For the fishing enthusiast, Maryland’s Eastern Shore is pretty much the ideal place to live. There are many different freshwater and saltwater locations with a huge variety of fish. What’s not to love? Most people think that fishing is a mostly summer activity, but in Maryland, there is still plenty of great fish left!

Cool Weather Fish

As the weather starts to cool down throughout the month of October, many types of fish team up and go into feeding frenzies to get themselves ready for winter. In The Chesapeake Bay, one of the most popular types of fish to catch is the Rockfish. During the mid to late fall, Rockfish can reach as large as 50 inches long! It can get pretty cold out there on the water this time of year, so be sure to check on the cabin heat on your boat before setting out!

Year-Round Residents

There are more than 300 different species of fish that call The Chesapeake Bay home year-round. Some come in from the ocean to eat, and others just live and eat in the bay all the time. These are just a couple of the most popular among anglers.

Spanish Mackerel– These fish migrate from South America, and reach the Bay around the middle of the summer. They can grow up to 3 feet long!

Spot– These bottom feeders are usually relatively small, but they make great bait fish for Striped Bass (Rockfish).

Striped Bass– The Striped Bass, or “Rockfish,” is extremely popular because they get quite large and many people really enjoy the taste. Some actually call it the state fish of Maryland, although that’s not official.
