Adding a Water Garden to Your Property

Adding a Water Garden to Your Property

A water garden is a fun summer project for your home!

When you live by the water, you’re always looking for something new to do with your home. Landscaping and hardscaping might be something you don’t often think about, but even if your neighbors are trying to outdo you, one idea is you can try is adding a water garden to your dream home this summer. Let’s find out how.

Find a Container

The first step is to find a container that catches your eye. You need something that is broad and shallow at the same time. Although you can pick something up from the store, try looking for something inside your home that you can already use, such as an old container from your outdoor kitchen. Or plan to go through the local yard sales and garage sales to find something that pleases you instead. Even when you don’t have much space to work with, you can make it work.

Pick Your Plants

The second step is to choose what plants you want to grow in your new water garden. Think about plants that will float on the surface of the water and provide an unexpected burst of color. Some examples include water lettuce, Azolla, duckweed, and hyacinth. Make sure that these plants won’t be poisonous to your pets, especially if they enjoy wandering around in your yard.

Take Care of It

Here is the moment of truth. Once you have started your water garden, you have to pay attention to it. Don’t let it wither out, which can be hard to do when a heat wave hits your neighborhood and all you want to do is stay inside where there is air conditioning. Take a look at the water and change it out when it starts getting dirty. Add some fertilizer whenever you change the water. Then sit back and relax as the plants start to thrive and make your home the envy of all your neighbors!
