Need to Get Out of the House? Get Your Yard Ready for Spring!

With the stay-at-home orders keeping everyone in the house all the time, it’s easy to go a little stir crazy. Fortunately, there is plenty you can do outside while still keeping you and your family safe.

With the stay-at-home orders keeping everyone in the house all the time, it’s easy to go a little stir crazy. Fortunately, there is plenty you can do outside while still keeping you and your family safe. While this winter was relatively mild in comparison to previous years, your yard will still need some maintenance to get it looking beautiful for spring. If you want something to do, why not try out some landscaping?

Furniture and Tools

If you haven’t already cut your grass for the first time this spring, now is a great time for that! You’ll want to start this process off by making sure your lawnmower and trimmer are in good working order. Are the blades properly sharpened and set to the level you want them? Do you have plenty of string in your trimmer? If they are gas-powered, you will need to re-fill the tanks. While at the gas station, be sure to wear gloves to protect your hands!

Once the grass is all cut and trimmed, you can get out any lawn furniture you may have put away.

In the Garden

You can also tackle your spring gardens. Out front, you’ll probably want flowers, shrubbery, and maybe a small tree or two. Living on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, there are hundreds of native plant species that thrive in our little corner of paradise so with a bit of research you can figure out exactly what you’d like to plant to make your lawn beautiful.

In the backyard you have a bit more latitude to play around a little. Try planting some vegetables and herbs! If you or someone in your home enjoys cooking, there’s nothing quite like fresh herbs to bring a recipe to the next level. If you plant your own vegetables, you’ll have fresh, organic produce all summer long! Towards the end of the summer, you can even preserve the excess harvest to use during the cooler months. If canning isn’t really your thing, share some fresh veggies with your family, friends, and neighbors! Everyone loves fresh veggies!
