3 Signs it’s Time for a New Patio

Now that the weather is warming up, you and your family are probably spending a lot more time in the yard. While you’re out there, take a good look at your patio. Are there any cracks you didn’t notice before? Is it starting to slant? Or is it just looking old and tired? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you might need a new one!

It’s Cracking Up

Whether your patio is stone or concrete, it does not bend. Sometimes, cracks can develop in your patio. The handy homeowner will whip up a batch of quick-dry concrete and have it patched in no time or if you prefer you can call a trusted professional. Cracks are an inevitable part of patio ownership; however, larger cracks can be dangerous, and can indicate a structural problem underneath the surface. All larger cracks should be assessed by a professional concrete contractor and may necessitate replacement of some or all of the patio surface.

The Ground is Uneven

Believe it or not, the topography of your property does change over the years. The changes are often quite gradual so you may not notice, especially at first, but your patio will. When the concrete is poured or the stone is installed, the contractors have to start by “grading” the land underneath. This grading has nothing to do with a report card and everything to do with making sure the land that will hold the new patio is totally flat. Now, over the years, soil erosion will disturb the soil around and underneath the patio and make that even ground uneven which can create all sorts of issues for the patio.

It Looks Worn Out

Depending on the age of your patio and the type of material it’s made of, it may just be worn out. When you’re entertaining or even just hanging out with your family, you want your patio to always look its best. At some point, your patio may reach the end of its life expectancy. Sure, you can patch and pressure wash to make it last as long as possible, but if you’ve already done all of that and there’s still unsightly damage it’s time for a replacement!
