Winter Homebuilding Myths

Winter Homebuilding Myths

Is it harder to build a home in winter? More on this myth and others here!

Winter is a harsh season for many, and most people would prefer to stay indoors where it is warm and comfortable. Outdoor work comes to a halt. This is not so for construction work. Construction workers continue to complete projects all year long and do not mind the weather, whether it is hot or cold. If you are considering building a waterfront custom home, here are a few winter homebuilding myths from which to steer clear.

Cold Weather Harms Lumber

One concern is that cold weather adversely affects lumber. All lumber for home building comes with the ideal moisture content of 19%. In moist climates like Maryland, and especially in places by the water, dried-out lumber won’t be an issue. The air’s humidity will keep the lumber from losing its moisture. Even in winter, the impact of the dry air on lumber is minimal. If it snows, the lumber will not gain moisture if one removes the snow before it melts.

Winter Compromises Concrete

Cold weather can affect how concrete will cure, but the construction industry has adapted to this issue decades ago. Homebuilders may use additives in the concrete to quicken the curing process, and some fear that they weaken it. However, one does not need to be afraid. Concrete with additives is just as sound as untreated concrete when fully cured and adheres to modern building codes.

Workmanship Suffers

Another winter homebuilding myth is that construction workers have a harder time doing a professional, proper job in cold weather. The truth is, there are very few days when the weather is ideal, and some people prefer colder or hotter climates to start. Construction workers are adept at performing professional work no matter what the weather is, and in Maryland, winters are much milder than up north.

Construction Delays Happen

With sleet and occasional snow, it may seem that winter homebuilding would have more delays than other times of the year. Delays can happen any time of year, and in the winter, one needn’t worry about it either.

Expenses Rise

It is possible that building a custom house in winter could cost more than in other seasons. However, if you are looking to build on Maryland’s waterfront, it is best to talk with Shore-Line Construction about what those additional costs might be on a case-by-case basis.
