Building a Home in a Windy Area

Building a Home in a Windy Area

Maryland coastal homes need protection against high winds. This is how they stay stalwart.

Maryland might be a small state compared to many in the U.S., but its geographical traits range from the mountains to the sandy plain. Even within the same region, you will find different weather patterns. A few miles could mean the difference between a hurricane-prone zone to a relatively mild area. If you plan to live on Maryland’s coastline, your property could be especially exposed to high winds. These are the recommended criteria for building a home in a windy area.

How High Wind Can Affect a Home

High winds can affect a house in four potential ways.

  1. Racking: The wind could force the house’s walls to slant.
  2. Uplifting: Wind could put upward vertical pressure on its joints.
  3. Sliding: The house could end up sliding horizontally off its foundation.
  4. Overturning: The house could angle upwards off its foundation.

What to Include in a High Wind-Resistant Home Design

The below criteria for building a home in a windy area include but are not limited to the following:

Aerodynamic Form

Some forms are more aerodynamic than others; they will allow wind to pass around them far easier and avoid wind damage. The pyramids of ancient Egypt are of particular note, and the pyramid is one of the most aerodynamic forms. In modern homes, pyramidal and hip roofs are the most wind-friendly, but those are only two options.

A Continuous Load Path

A continuous load path is a structural channel through which a force can go without damaging the entire building. House builders screw metal clips to secure the roof to the house, as well as connector straps and ties that join the walls, floor levels, and foundation together.

Reinforced Walls

Another way to stabilize your custom coastal home is to add reinforced walls, known as shear walls. They can be different materials, from concrete to plywood, but all help to create a more rigid structure that can withstand wind.

Hurricane Straps & Ties

These metal connectors come in all shapes and sizes, connecting wood to wood, wood to concrete, and wood to masonry. They are the tools to create a continuous load path from the roof to the foundation and include anchors, joist hangers, and ties.
