If you are looking to build and design your new waterfront home for your family, retirement, or multi-generational house, then you are in the right place, especially if you are looking to build in Maryland. Shore-Line Construction is a full-service custom home builder that specializes in Maryland waterfront home construction. Considering that you are looking into flooring options, carpeting may come to mind. Is carpeting for waterfront homes a good choice or a disastrous mistake?

Can You Use Carpeting in Your Custom Home?

No matter if your house is on the waterfront or if it is inland, there are some rooms that are more appropriate for carpeting than others. The places that are most suitable for carpeting include living rooms, bedrooms, basements, home offices, stairs, and upstairs hallways. Carpeting is the worst flooring material for bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, pantries, and main entryways.

As you likely can imagine, tracking in a lot of dirt, sand, and moisture from the beach or general outdoors can make a carpet dirty and soggy very quickly with enough foot traffic, especially if it a high-pile carpet. For that reason, you might opt for a hard flooring surface in all areas with an exterior door, which could include the living room.

A concern with that is that your home could be a lot more echoey and less private, since carpeting absorbs sound. You might also just love carpeting. Besides, who wouldn’t appreciate the feeling of a plush surface underfoot when you’re at home?

There are three potential solutions. One is to choose a hard flooring such as luxury vinyl plank, porcelain tile, brick, wood, concrete, or laminate. Another is to install one of these flooring options and add a large area rug, which you will still need to clean separately from the floor. The third option is to install a carpet floor that is most resistant to moisture and dirt even if high-traffic environments.

How to Choose Carpeting for Your Waterfront Home

For high-traffic areas like a living room with a back door, the best carpeting material would be a woven or low-pile carpet. Wool, polyester, and nylon are excellent carpet fibers that will be easier to clean.
