Keeping Pests Out of Your Garden without Harsh Chemicals

Here are some tips for keeping the pests away without using harsh and harmful chemicals.

Spring has finally sprung here in Maryland, which means it’s time to start planning your garden for this year. Summer will be here before we know it, after all! One of the best things about living near the water is that there is a significant amount of biodiversity, with so many different types of birds, animals, plants, and insects. An unfortunate side effect of all of those insects is that they can sometimes overstay their welcome and interfere with your gardens. Here are some tips for keeping the pests away without using harsh and harmful chemicals.

Shoo, Fly!

Gnats, flies, and mosquitoes are absolutely everywhere during the hot summers on the Eastern Shore and we’re always trying new ways to keep them away from us. While you’re outside, pinning a dryer sheet to your clothing somewhere can help to keep many of these pests away. Unfortunately, however, this does not work for mosquitoes. Since mosquitoes thrive in the wet environments found in coastal regions, it probably seems like they just get worse every summer. There are a few different ways you can repel these annoying insects:

  • Bug zapper lights
  • Citronella candles
  • Turning on a fan nearby (such as a ceiling fan on a deck or porch)

Keep Off the Plants

Cute little rabbits, deer, and ladybugs can be fun to look at but they are far less cute when they’re in your garden and eating your plants. Fortunately, there is a simple DIY solution to keep these pests away from your plants. You will need about two cups of fresh or dried hot peppers and two cups of water. Combine them in a blender until the mixture is smooth. Bring it to a boil and then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about five minutes. Once it is cool, use a piece of cheesecloth to strain out the seeds and pour it into a spray bottle. You can use the spray about once a week to deter garden pests. It won’t harm your plants or the environment!
