Signs You Are Ready for Homeownership

Signs You Are Ready for Homeownership

Are you ready for homeownership? Here are a few pointers to help you know for sure.

The American dream means independence in far more ways than one, and one of the most basic forms of independence an American strives for is homeownership. No more paying rent to the landlord; you can be fully responsible for and in control of your own domain. Homeownership is one of the biggest steps you will ever take financially. The question is, are you ready? Below are four signs you are ready for homeownership.

Financial Responsibility

The first sign you are ready for homeownership is that you can be trusted with paying off the mortgage and everything else that comes with it. The two questions to ask to know this are, “Are you a good renter?” and “Do you have good credit?” If you have no problem paying off the rent on time, and you never have excessive if any debt, then you will have no problem with taking on a mortgage, interest, utilities, homeowner’s insurance, maintenance, taxes, etc.

Knowing What You Want

The fun part is knowing what you want. You will want to at least the following:

  1. Where you want to live
  2. What kind of neighborhood you want to be in
  3. What house style you prefer
  4. How many bedrooms and baths and how much space you need
  5. How much land you want

If you have 100% confidence that you prefer a waterfront property in Maryland and have a solid idea for what amenities you want and need, you are one step further in making the right housing decision.

Job Security

You will also want to be sure that you can expect to be able to keep up with the payments through job security. Financial experts recommend that you spend no more than 28-33% of your yearly income on housing. If this is accurate for you, and you love your job and don’t expect to leave anytime soon, then you have a better chance of being ready for homeownership.

Understanding the Process

You never want to go into the house-building process without knowing what you are doing. One should find a trusted lender who can help you gain a stable strategy for paying off your home, be prepared to give a 20% downpayment, have savings, and work with a custom home builder that will provide proper resources and guidance.
