Can you keep the view but block the wind? Take a look at these wind barrier ideas.
Waterfront homes have the luxury of living on the water and possibly having its own private dock as well. There are challenges that come with living on the water, though, such as slightly colder temperatures, the risk of flooding, and stronger winds. If your waterfront home is expected to face significantly windy weather on a regular basis, then you might want one of these five wind barriers for waterfront patios.
Plexiglass Wind Barriers
One of the challenges of finding the right wind barriers for waterfront homes is preserving the waterfront view. The wind is most likely to blow from the water toward your house. If you want a permanent wind barrier, then a plexiglass wind barrier might be right for you. It is clear and provides a solid barrier against strong gusts of wind.
Trees, Shrubs, and Grasses
Trees, shrubs, and grasses are natural wind barriers. Practically any solid object will help block the path of wind. Strategic landscaping can help filter out some of that wind from the water without blocking the beautiful views.
Retractable Screens
Maryland, located in the Mid-Atlantic region, has plenty of calm, sunny days. Depending on where you are located, some days may be calmer than others. If so, you could choose to install retractable windscreens, especially if you have a covered deck, patio, or porch.
Lattices or Trellises
Not all wind barriers for waterfront homes have to be completely solid. Lattices and trellises are also options that filter out the wind well. It’s possible to train climbing plants on them, a plus if you have a green thumb. The downside is that it could block some of your views on the patio or deck.
Curtains
Another retractable option is curtains hanging from your pergola or porch. Outdoor curtains are thick and durable. For a stronger wind barrier, you can also tie the curtains down at the bottom corners.
