Guide to Winterizing Your Custom Home

Guide to Winterizing Your Custom Home

With another winter heading our way, it’s definitely time to think about winterizing our homes to make sure the cold stays outside.

No one wants to think about it, but Old Man Winter is going to be here before we know it. In Maryland, that can mean anything from lots of rain and cold weather to piles of snow and sub-zero wind chills. We never know what we’re going to get! With another winter heading our way, it’s definitely time to think about winterizing our homes to make sure the cold stays outside.

Ensure Smoke And Carbon Monoxide Detectors are Functioning Properly

Testing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home is one of the most important winterizing tasks. Make sure your detectors’ batteries have plenty of life left and that the units are functioning properly. It can save your home and your life!

Furnace Maintenance

Winterizing means making sure your home will stay warm. Your furnace is going to be working hard all season long to keep your home warm. Make sure it will be able to do its job well by having your furnace checked by a licensed professional. If any issues are found, have them fixed right away. Being without heat in the winter is no fun!

Change The HVAC Filters

Keeping HVAC filters clean is important year-round but it is especially important when the heat is on. A clogged air filter introduces all sorts of allergens into the air, as well as restricting airflow. The allergens are bad for your family’s health, and the restricted airflow is bad for your furnace’s health as it causes the unit to have to work harder to move the air through your home.

Change Ceiling Fan Directions

Most people think that fans are just for helping to keep your home cool in the summer heat, but ceiling fans can be helpful in the winter, too. Most ceiling fans have a small switch on the side that controls the direction the blades will spin.
