A large family could be a family of five or more. Some people know how large they want their family to be, and others know when it is complete. The question here is what kind of house a large family should have. Each family’s priorities will vary, but these are several questions to ask concerning home design options for large families. If you have any questions or would like to see if we are the custom home builder for you, please contact Shore-Line Construction!

How Many Bedrooms Should a Large Family Have?

The absolute minimum number of bedrooms that would be safe to have for a large, growing family is three: one for the parents, one for girls, and one for boys. Even if your family only has boys or only girls, it is still a good idea to have at least two bedrooms for the kids in a large family to give more space and privacy. It may also be safer and prevent overcrowding.

What Kind of Layout Should the Home Have for Everyday Living?

Some households prefer closed kitchens to contain grease and strong cooking smells. Others are happy with the open floor plan, which has been trending in recent decades. The benefit of a kitchen that is open to the dining room, living room, or both is that you can congregate in one space while multitasking. Open-concept kitchens are also very entertainment-friendly.

What Other Spaces Might the Kids Need When Growing Up?

In addition to bedrooms, you will also need to consider what your family will need in daily life in the house. At a bare minimum, the home could have two full bathrooms, but three full baths minimum would be ideal.

Aside from the living room and dining room, a secondary living room, home office, and even a basement or finished attic could give the kids a rec room with enough space to play freely.

If you are an outdoor-loving family that likes to play outdoor games, consider your outdoor space. Do you need a flat lawn for playing soccer, or a flat, large driveway for basketball? The right builder can help you locate the property you need to achieve those goals affordably.

Finishing Touches

Family homes can require a lot of regular cleaning and durability against dirt, stains, wear, and tear. Consider low-maintenance home design options for large families like vinyl plank flooring, countertops with no sharp edges, and other easy-to-clean surfaces.
