Winter Maintenance for Waterfront Homes

Winter Maintenance for Waterfront Homes

Tis the season: check out these waterfront home winter maintenance tips for a warm and festive season!

Each of the seasons can impact a waterfront home a little differently from other types of homes. Living on the water often means windier, harsher, and colder weather than on the mainland, especially in winter. Winter maintenance for waterfront homes does not have to be troubling, however. You can enjoy a great winter every year in your waterfront home with these simple tasks.

Deicing

Like any home in winter, your waterfront property could benefit from preparations for ice on the driveway and walkways. Magnesium chloride is one of the best types of deicers on the market today; you can find different products for melting ice on concrete, wood, asphalt, etc.

Removing Snow

Snow removal is another necessary task to put on a provisional winter maintenance to-do list. Shoveling snow off your deck or balcony, if you have one, will help relieve it of the weight; keeping your driveway and walkways clear will naturally help you travel in and out of your house. It is also important to clear neighborhood sidewalks along your property; in fact, some areas may have laws regarding this.

Checking for Air Leaks

Air leaks can happen at various points around the house. The main areas to check over time include the chimney, the roof edges, the doors, and the windows. Chimneys can become drafty, and icicles hanging from the eaves signal a leaky attic. Doors and windows are notorious for becoming drafty over time, but caulking and heavy curtains improve energy efficiency.

Insulating Pipes

Another major concern is the cold weather’s effect on water pipes. If the pipes do not have insulation, they will burst from the built-up air pressure. If you open the faucets slightly to let out internal air, it will help to avoid this problem. You will also want to add insulation to exposed water pipes for protection during a power outage.
