How to Research Places to Live

How to Research Places to Live

Homes are customizable but locations are permanent. Here’s how to find your home.

Finding a new home often involves going farther than down the street. It can take you to a completely different neighborhood or state or region. Even if you are moving within the same county, another neighborhood may be completely foreign to you. How do you research places to live? Practice these tips to find the ideal new home location for you.

Read the Local Social Media & Newspapers

In this digital era, you don’t have to start your research with travel. You can get a lot of insight into a location by reading the neighborhood’s social media pages, email newsletters, and digital newspapers. It will tell you a lot about the happenings, people, and feeling of the place. Could you see yourself fitting into this community? Would it be the best place for you to settle down?

Talk with the Locals and Neighbors

Even though there’s a lot you can glean from online information, there is nothing like actually going to the place you might call home and talking with the neighbors. Introversion is no excuse to make connections and learn about what it’s like living here and how the neighbors and locals like it. The people who live in your prospective area have real-life experience in calling it home.

Research Local Schools, Crime, Development, Etc.

What topics should you look for when researching places to live? Typical points include local schools, crime rate, future development, walkability, and access to public transit and groceries. You can also look at whether or not it has an HOA, how high the taxes are, and if the neighborhood has communal amenities like water access and playgrounds.

If you have a specific home site in mind, see where it is positioned on the road. Does a lot of traffic pass it? Are big developments happening near it? Does it have privacy or nice views? Is it close to a school? Are there sidewalks? How close is it to the nearest highway? Its position can affect its desirability and cost. If it’s a waterfront home, read this.

Live Like a Local

Lastly, live like a local. Do your shopping there and eat out at a local restaurant. Take your dog to the park and go to the gym. Talk with the locals and ask them how they like living here. If the area is too far to commute to from your current residence, book a short-term rental or vacation rental. Test it out for yourself to see how you like it.
