Popular Waterfront House Styles

Waterfront homes can take on just about any style. Take a look at these popular choices!

When building a custom home, there are no “musts” concerning form or style. While there are some basics you’ll likely want, such as sizable bedrooms, living areas, and utility rooms, the way you make it happen is entirely up to you. Likewise, the style of your waterfront home can be anything you wish. Here are several popular waterfront house styles to consider.

Coastal Traditional

A coastal traditional home carries all the characteristics of a traditional house, with possible adjustments for a waterfront setting. This floor plan can include Colonial, Georgian, or Shingle elements. Typically, it is a no-nonsense style with little ornamentation, simple lines, and uniform windows. A coastal house might have a garage at the lowest level as a flooding precaution.

Craftsman

Born out of the American Arts & Crafts Movement, the craftsman style house is very popular today. It is marked by its thick, tapering columns, dormer windows, earthy colors, and built-in furniture. If you like the idea of sitting out on the front or back porch, this is a contending style for you!

Modern

Modern homes are also great favorites on the waterfront. Modern style houses can veer towards the mid-century modern style, with geometric lines and a smattering of glass and metal finishes. On the other hand, most coastal modern houses are simply modern, incorporating the quintessential look of a stylish 2021 house inside and out with few historical touches.

Coastal Cottage

One might think of a cottage as a small English abode in the countryside, but today, it is understood to be a smaller house that can take on an array of waterfront house styles. Like any coastal home, it is more likely to have large windows, living areas above the garage or patio, and a porch, deck, or balcony.

Farmhouse

The coastal farmhouse style is one of the most rustic of all the popular waterfront house styles you’ll see. You are more likely to see wide gables, front and back porches, natural woods, and vertical siding.

Mixing It Up

Waterfront house styles don’t have to be in rigid categories. Plenty of mixed styles abound, including the coastal modern farmhouse! If you are ready to start on your custom home building journey, contact Shore-Line Construction today!
