Measuring the Energy Efficiency of Your New Home

Measuring the Energy Efficiency of Your New Home

How energy efficient is your waterfront custom home?

When you live by the shore, you can integrate alternative sources of energy. What this is that your custom home can rely on water and wind power to help generate electricity in a clean and renewable way. Here is a guide on how to evaluate the energy efficiency of your new home!

Attics

One way to gauge how effective your energy-saving measures are is to check the attic. It may be difficult and exhausting to access this storage space, but it is still essential. How much insulation is up there? If there isn’t enough, you won’t know until you investigate for yourself. However, do not try to add more insulation by yourself. Speak to your friendly custom home builder during the new construction phase or after the home has settled for a few months afterward. Many different options are available. The most common types are called spray foam, cellulose, and fiberglass.

Windows

The next step is to assess the condition of the windows. It’s often said that your eyes are the window into your soul – well, that principle applies to your home as well! Newer windows are more energy-efficient than older models. A chilly draft tells you that something has gone wrong. Perhaps condensation buildup has caused an unexpected leak, or your windows need to be replaced after a year or two of wear and tear – but that shouldn’t be the case! Double-pane windows are some of the best, considering their low emission ratings.

Doors

How do your doors look? They are often mentioned in the same breath as windows. Even so, they might not get as much attention. At least, not as much as they should. Wooden door frames can crack and split; just live the wooden picket fences you placed in the sand to help mark your property boundaries. That means the proper maintenance is even more critical than when you have other types of doors installed on your home. Check the front, side, back patio, and garage doors!
